How to Use Lab Thermometer

Here are the following steps on how to use a thermometer.

1.    Inspect the Thermometer

 Before using the thermometer, ensure that it is clean and free from waste. In case it is not clean, wash it with mild soap and water solution.

2.    Shake the Thermometer Down

 Make sure that the mercury and alcohol filled in the thermometer are at the end of the bulb.

3.    Dip the Thermometer in the Liquid

  The lab thermometer must be completely immersed in the solution. But always keep in mind, the bulb should be under the surface of the liquid, but not touch the bottom of the vessel.

4.    Wait For the Mercury or Alcohol to rise

 As soon as the thermometer warms up the alcohol or mercury will arise. The level of mercury will indicate the temperature of the solution. 

5.    Record the Temperature Reading

On the thermometer, read the temperature where the mercury or alcohol meets the scale.

6.    Remove the Thermometer From the Liquid

Be careful while removing the thermometer. Apart from this also ensure that you do not touch the end of the thermometer.

7.    Wipe the Thermometer

 Once you take the reading, wipe the thermometer with a clean cloth.
